Privacy policy

What we collect when you use this site, why, and the choices you have. We have tried to collect as little as possible.

Who we are

This site, www.panafricanewsmedia.com, is published by Pan African News Media, which is owned and run by the African Coalition for Development. For any privacy question or request, write to newsroom@panafricanewsmedia.com.

What we collect

Newsletter: if you subscribe to the Morning Brief we store your email address and the page you signed up from. We use it only to send you a welcome message and the newsletter. Like most email services, the one we use records whether an email was delivered and opened and which links in it were clicked.

Show applications: if you pitch a show to us we store your name, organisation, contact details, and what you tell us about the show, so that our programming team can consider it and reply.

Advertising enquiries: if you use the form on our Advertise page we store your name, company, email address, phone number if you give one, and your message, so that our advertising team can reply. The enquiry is also emailed to our advertising inbox.

Advertising bookings: if you book advertising with us we store your business name, your name, email address and phone number, what you booked and paid, and the artwork, links, dates and approval you send us. Card payments are taken by Stripe; we receive confirmation of the payment but never your card number. Paying advertisers are also added to our customer records system, and we email you about your booking.

Community notices: if you pay for a notice we keep your name and contact details so that we can deal with you. The notice itself is public, and shows who placed it and any contact details you asked us to include.

Emails you send us: if you write to one of our addresses we keep the message for as long as we need it to reply and for our records.

Visit counts: we count how many times each page is viewed, roughly how many browsers visit each day, and which website referred a visit. These are daily totals only. We do not store IP addresses, do not use tracking cookies, and cannot tell who an individual visitor is.

Advertising counts: we count how many times each advertisement, sponsor's name, television spot and community notice is shown and clicked. These are totals only and are not linked to you.

Preferences on your device: your browser keeps two small settings in its local storage, your light or dark mode choice and a marker that today's visit has already been counted. They stay on your device and are never sent to us.

Newsroom accounts: our writers, hosts and editors have accounts that hold their name, email address, job title, biography and photo. Names, titles, biographies and photos are shown publicly on our team page and their profile pages. Email addresses are not.

What we do not do

We do not sell personal information. We do not build advertising profiles of our readers. Advertisements, sponsorships and notices on this site are placed directly by us, are labelled, and do not track you across other websites.

Services that receive information when you use the site

To run the site we rely on a small number of providers, who may process technical information such as your IP address in order to deliver pages to you: Netlify (website hosting), Supabase (our database and newsroom accounts), HighLevel, the customer-relationship platform we use (storing newsletter subscribers, advertising enquiries and show applications, and sending the newsletter), Brevo (sending newsroom account emails and passing enquiries to our team), Google Workspace (our mailboxes) and Google Fonts (the typefaces used on the site).

Our Live TV channel is delivered through YouTube's privacy-enhanced player and starts playing when you open the Live TV page; the short adverts shown between programmes are delivered the same way. When you play any other video or audio programme, it is delivered by the service that hosts it, such as YouTube, Vimeo, Spotify or a podcast host. Those services have their own privacy policies and may set their own cookies once a video is playing.

Our “Across Africa now” section, our sponsors' names and our community notices may link to other websites. When you follow a link you leave this site and that site's policy applies.

Stripe processes card payments for advertising bookings and receives the details you enter on its payment page, under its own privacy policy.

How long we keep it

Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Advertising enquiries, show applications and the details of people who place notices are kept while we are dealing with them and for our business records afterwards; you can ask us to delete them at any time. Daily visit and advertising totals are kept so that we can compare periods over time; they contain no personal information. Newsroom account details are kept while the person works with us.

Advertising booking records, including the materials you sent, are kept for as long as we need them for our accounts and to answer questions about the campaign.

Your choices

You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time using the link at the bottom of every email, or by writing to us.

You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under laws such as the GDPR, Nigeria's Data Protection Act, South Africa's POPIA or Kenya's Data Protection Act. Write to newsroom@panafricanewsmedia.com and we will respond within 30 days.

Children

This site is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and the date at the top.
